DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Agency Summary
San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) is a community-based, anti-sexual assault, social justice organization. We provide support to sexual assault survivors, their families, and communities, and use education and community organizing as tools of prevention. We believe that ending all forms of oppression is integral to ending sexual assault and challenge oppression within our organization and communities. We are women of color-led and prioritize working with and for communities facing multiple forms of violence and oppression.

Development Program Summary
SFWAR’s Development Program prioritizes building a strong base of individual grassroots donors, along with engaging the support of foundations and corporate funders that reflect our political commitments. SFWAR’s donors are an integral part of the organization and are valued for their active commitment to addressing sexual violence. We value donors from all economic, social and cultural spheres and continuously expand our capacity to effect social change through cultivation of new supporters. The Director of Development (DD) works with a Development Team that includes a small Board of Directors (BOD), Executive Director (ED), Development Associate (DA), Office Manager and volunteers/interns to realize SFWAR’s development vision. All agency staff also participate in fundraising activities. The Development Program is currently responsible for raising approximately $150,000 to $200,000 annually.

Position Summary
The SFWAR DD works with the Development Team to elaborate, implement and evaluate annual and long-term development plans. The DD is supervised by the ED and supervises the DA and Development Program volunteers/interns.

Responsibilities
Program Management:
Work with Development Team to draft annual and long-term development plans, including goals and activities; manage and track all development activities; oversee maintenance of donor database and donor communications; develop and manage annual program budget; prepare and present analysis of activities to staff and BOD; support ongoing skill-building and involvement of agency staff in development activities; represent agency as appropriate.

Grassroots Fundraising:
Engage a number of individual donor cultivation activities, including direct canvassing, phone banks, mail appeals, ongoing donor cultivation, workplace giving programs, in-kind donation solicitations, and annual special events – including Walk Against Rape, Artists Against Rape, and She Who Laugh Lasts; work with ED and BOD to implement major donor campaign; oversee newsletter/annual report production.


Foundation & Corporate Grants Fundraising:
Research prospective funding opportunities; work with ED to implement cultivation strategies; work with ED and program directors to write program descriptions and collect program data; directly
research and prepare or work in concert with the ED to submit LOIs and grant proposals, including supporting materials; work with program staff to prepare and submit required progress report materials.


Additional Responsibilities:
Participate in team planning and decision-making; participate in organizational planning and evaluation activities, including strategic planning; participate in website development; provide counseling on 24-hour hotline and medical accompaniment support to survivors; maintain client confidentiality; responsible for own typing, filing, and administrative activities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of development and fundraising experience with applied
    knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations with individuals,
    foundations, corporations, and other sources.

  • Experience, interest and a proven track record with major gift fundraising.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively transmit SFWAR’s
    fundraising vision across staff, board, volunteers, donors, and community members.
  • Strong writing skills, including ability to produce a range of written materials and
    grant proposals.
  • Excellent research, analytical, planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and lead a team to achieve program goals with
    creativity and resourcefulness.
  • Excellent public-speaking and media skills.
  • Event planning experience.
  • Experience with donor databases (preferably DonorPerfect) and in managing
    systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects.
  • Experience with desktop publishing and word-processing software.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to integrate feedback from supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, and
    community members.
  • Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers/interns.

Salary & Benefits
  • $49,920 year starting salary.
  • Employer-paid health, vision, and life insurance; 50% employer-paid dental insurance; employer contribution to retirement IRA.
  • Annual paid leave for Full Time Employees (pro-rated for Part Time Employees): two weeks vacation for first year of employment; two weeks of sick leave; one week of mental health leave; 3 1/2 days of flexible “holidays”.
  • Stipend for bilingual staff
  • This is an exempt position
